Charles Heavitree Todd was an impoverished young scientist from Greenwich who went to South Australia in 1855 as Government Astronomer and Superintendent of Telegraphs. With the help of his wife Alice, he strung a telegraph wire across one of the last great colonial wildernesses to connect Australia with Britain. Alice gave her name to 'Alice Springs', which they discovered on their journey. The book has been written by their great-great granddaughter and contains 43 b/w illustrations and maps.
