An Irish nurse, Heckford spent two years in India, before emigrating to South Africa in 1878. During the summer she was a farmer and after the harvest she would travel up to the veld in her cart to trade with the Boers and Afrikaners. She also turned her hand to other things such as trading in shares and running a bullock-drawn transport fleet. During the war itself she became a self-appointed spy, reporting distant enemy movements to the British. Contains 21 b/w illustrations.
