| THE REMARKABLE CAREER OF A VICTORIAN SAILOR - The Journals and Letters of Samuel Gurney Cresswell (1827-1867) who joined the Navy at 14, serving in the Far East against Malay pirates, and then embarking on a famous four-year Arctic expedition during which he became one of the first men to navigate the North West Passage. After service in the Baltic Fleet in 1854 during the war with Russia, he obtained his first command and returned to the China station, where he was engaged in the Imperial coercion that opened that country to the western powers. Cresswell's journals offer a remarkable insight into naval life of the time, especially during the difficult transition from sail to steam propulsion. His drawings which occupy 16 pages of the book, were of such quality that he was summoned to present his work to Queen Victoria.
