Sir Reginald Goodall was one of the greatest Wagner conductors of our times. When he died in 1990, at the age of 88, he had already acquired cult status, yet it was only during the last 20 years of his life that he became at all well known. His early career was something of a mystery, his pre-war (and even wartime) Fascist sympathies providing a particular source of speculation. Now, with the help of letters, diaries and interviews with Goodall's friends and colleagues, John Lucas has pieced together the life of this enigmatic, self-effacing figure.
