THE HAMBROS 1779-1979 follows the lives of each of Calmer and Thobe's four children - Zipora, Joseph, Isaac and Simon - and their descendants in Denmark, Norway and England, showing how they adapted to their new conditions and became leading figures of their day. Even now their names resound among the academic and political spheres of Norway. In Denmark and later in England, meanwhile, they achieved worldwide repute as merchant bankers, successfully transforming the small merchanting business into a fully-fledged international banking concern. The detailed account of these developments gives
a rare insight into the socio-economic history of a traditional London merchant bank.
