Robin Tanner was born in Bristol in 1904. He died in 1988 after an extraordinarily rich and full life. As well as being a celebrated etcher in the tradition of Samuel Palmer, a highly influential educationist, and a committed campaigner for peace and the environment, he was also a gifted and prolific letter-writer. Hundreds of his letters to a wide range of correspondents have been gathered, selected and edited by Tim Fenn.
The earliest letter in this collection was written in 1920 whilst Robin was still a schoolboy, and the last just a few days before his death. The great diversity of the topics dealt with - etching and teaching of course, but also natural history, his beloved countryside, gardening, music, poetry and books, not to mention disarmament and peace - provides us with a uniquely rounded, even intimate picture of this passionate, multi-faceted man.
From Old Chapel Field was published as a companion volume to Double Harness, Robin Tanner's acclaimed autobiography.
